Beginner's Guide
The UK Social Casino Guide
Everything you need to know about free-to-play social casino games — what they are, what they are not, and how to enjoy them sensibly.

1. What Is a Social Casino?
A social casino offers casino-style games — such as slots — that you play for fun using virtual credits instead of money. There is nothing to stake and nothing of value to win. Crown Social Play is a social casino: our games are free demo versions supplied by established game studios, and you can play them straight from your browser.

Under the Gambling Act 2005, a game is gambling when you can win a prize of money or money's worth. Our games offer no prizes and credits cannot be exchanged, so they are entertainment rather than gambling. Read more on our UK Gambling Regulations page.
3. How Virtual Credits Work
- Every demo game starts you with a balance of free virtual credits.
- Credits exist only inside the game and reset when you reload it.
- They have no monetary value and cannot be bought, sold, transferred or exchanged.
- A "win" in a demo game is simply part of the game's animation and entertainment.
4. Types of Casino-Style Games
Video slots
The most popular style of game, with themed reels, animations and bonus features. Our featured game, Manta Mayhem by Play'n GO, is an underwater-themed video slot.
Classic slots
Simpler three-reel games inspired by traditional fruit machines.
Table-style games
Digital versions of roulette, blackjack and similar games with clear, quick rounds.
5. RTP and Volatility Explained
You may see terms like RTP (return to player) in game information. RTP is a theoretical figure calculated over millions of plays — it does not predict what happens in any one session. Volatility describes how results are spread: low-volatility games tend to have smaller, more frequent results, while high-volatility games are less predictable. Every spin is random and independent of the last.
6. Common Myths
- "Practising for free will make me better at real-money gambling." False. Slot results are random, and practice or success at social casino gaming does not imply future success at real-money gambling.
- "A game is due a big win." False. Each spin is independent; past results never affect future ones.
- "There is a system that beats slots." False. No strategy can change the outcome of a random game.
7. Why Social Casinos Are 18+
Even without money, casino-style games can make gambling seem normal or easy to young people. UK advertising rules also restrict gambling-style content from appealing to under-18s. That is why Crown Social Play asks every visitor to confirm they are 18 or over, and why our design and language are aimed at adults only.
8. Keeping Play Healthy
Free games should stay a light-hearted break. Set yourself a time limit, take regular breaks and balance gaming with other activities. If you notice casino-style games leading you towards real-money gambling you are not comfortable with, our Safer Play page lists free, confidential support, including the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133.
